The Importance of Medical Imaging in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Disease
Medical imaging techniques, like MRI and CT scans, have become incredibly important in modern medicine. The body only has a certain number of outward symptoms that can be used to diagnose an internal condition. Medical imaging provides physicians with the best information available about the physical state of your body’s functionality. Imaging centers like Southwest Diagnostic offer patients and physicians a specialized facility where a number of medical imaging techniques can be readily performed. Here are just a few of the imaging processes provided by our imaging centers:
- CT Scan
A CT scan is a modern scanning technique that uses x-ray technology in conjunction with computer processing to produce multiple images of the body’s inner workings. Because a CT scan utilizes x-ray technology, it does use some minimal radiation. However, the CT scan provides your doctor with a detailed image often preferred to analyze possible cancers and measure their size and shape.
- MRI
An MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, is an imaging procedure that produces cross-section images of your body. Unlike a CT scan, an MRI does not use radiation to produce its image. The images that are produced by an MRI can be used to diagnose the condition of your internal organs and musculoskeletal system. Your physician can spot tumors, certain types of heart problems, and certain types of diseases with an MRI.
- Mammography
A mammography uses low levels of x-ray radiation to examine breasts for cancer cell growth. Without mammograms, early detection and treatment of breast cancer would be next to impossible. Like all forms of cancer, breast cancer is best treated as soon as possible.
