Imaging centers often perform bone densitometry tests, or bone density imaging, to evaluate the health of patients’ bones. It’s a non-invasive radiological test that allows the doctor to identify insufficient bone mass. If you’re scheduled for a bone density scan at an imaging center, keep reading for an overview of what you can expect and why your doctor may have recommended the test.
Candidates
Bone densitometry is helpful if you’re at risk of osteoporosis or you have already broken a bone and your doctor suspects osteoporosis. You may be at a higher risk of bone loss if you are a post-menopausal woman, you have a history of smoking or hip fractures, or if you have certain medical conditions, such as thyroid disorder. Those who take certain medications, such as steroids, women with low estrogen levels, and those who have received an organ transplant can also benefit from a bone density test at an imaging center.
Preparations
Little preparation is needed for this test. If you take calcium supplements, do not take them for 24 hours prior to the test. Wear comfortable clothing that is free of zippers and other metal adornments. Avoid wearing jewelry to the imaging center. Tell your doctor about any changes in your medical history, including recent a barium test or contrast dye injection.
Techniques
The technician at your imaging center may use a central or peripheral device to measure your bone density. Central devices work on the hip and the spine, while peripheral devices measure bone mass in a finger, wrist, or heel. The test is completely painless, and it will be over within 10 minutes.
Results
Your doctor will explain your results to you. If you have a T-score above negative one, you have a normal bone density. A Z-score of negative two or less could indicate a bone mass issue.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a common type of heart disease and a leading cause of death in the U.S. It occurs when low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol accumulates on the arterial walls of the coronary arteries and forms plaque. Sometimes, patients with this condition will not experience any symptoms. Other patients may experience a blockage of blood flow, or a rupturing of the plaque, which requires immediate medical attention.
