Three Common Reasons for Getting an MRI

    Last updated 7 months ago

Chances are you know someone who has gotten an MRI or have had a screening yourself. MRIs, or magnetic resonance imaging scans, are commonly used to help doctors gain a better view and understanding of a patient’s health and any illnesses he or she may have. With the information gained from an MRI scan, your doctor can make a more accurate diagnosis and customize your treatment for the most effective care. Here are a few common reasons patients get MRIs.

    1. Sports Injuries: Many athletes, professional and recreational, experience some kind of injury during their careers. Even if sports are just an activity you enjoy in your free time, an injury can have complex and serious consequences. To better evaluate your injury and the extent of damage, your physician may order an MRI. The test helps your doctor to diagnose the type, severity and complexity of your athletic injury.
    2. Heart Conditions: MRIs are an effective tool for examining the structure and integrity of internal organs, including the heart. The detail produced by an MRI scan can show aneurysms or tears in the heart and blood vessels, and the test can also reveal the presence of heart conditions like coronary artery disease. If you have suffered from cardiac arrest, a cardiac MRI can show doctors any resultant changes to the heart and its muscles.
    3. Brain Abnormalities: Another common use for MRIs is helping doctors gain a clearer view of the brain and its surrounding tissue. An MRI scan can show abnormalities in the brain, including aneurysms and benign and malignant tumors. If a doctor believes that a patient may have multiple sclerosis, an MRI can show if any abnormal tissue is present.

Can Digital Diagnostics Help Save Your Life?

    Last updated 8 months ago

Diagnostic imaging provides physicians with the tests and tools to detect a wide variety of medical issues, some of them which may be life-threatening. Thanks to advances in science and technology, the digital images rendered by some of these tests can help your doctor make even earlier and more accurate diagnoses than before. With an early diagnosis, and with the detailed information provided by a medical imaging test, patients and physicians can better combat diseases like breast cancer by creating a customized and targeted treatment plan.

    • If you are under the age of 50 or have dense breasts, you may benefit from digital mammography, a screening that can produce more accurate images of the breast tissue. The National Cancer Institute discusses the advantages of digital mammography over film mammography.
    • Undergoing routine mammograms can help to save your life from breast cancer. Learn more about the relationship between mammography and reduced breast cancer deaths from the American Cancer Society.
    • The “gold standard” in medical imaging, digital x-rays can produce more detailed images in a shorter amount of time than traditional x-rays. Digital x-rays can be used for a variety of purposes, including bone radiography.
