Some children do remarkably well when they must undergo CT scans or MRIs, while others become a bit nervous. If your child’s doctor has recommended an imaging scan, ask him or her how you can best explain the test to your child. There are a few unique challenges concerning pediatric imaging; here’s a look at a few of them and what you can do to help:
Minimizing Anxiety
If your child is young or shy, he may feel anxiety before a CT scan or other test. Explain to your child that he will not feel any pain during an imaging test, and that you will be in the room the whole time. Remember that expectant mothers cannot remain in the room, so if this applies to you, have someone else stay in the room with your child. If your child is old enough to understand, you might consider adding some more details. For example, tell your child that the doctor will take some special photographs to make sure that he or she is healthy. Sometimes, children with special needs can experience anxiety with a change in routine. If your child has special needs, consider asking the staff at the imaging center to allow a brief tour before the procedure to let your child become more comfortable.
Staying Still
In order for the CT scan or MRI to produce clear images, your child must remain very still throughout the procedure. This is often the issue that presents the most difficulty for children. Consider bringing items that your child finds comforting, such as a favorite blanket or stuffed animal. Very young children may benefit from a pacifier.
Dealing with Dietary Restrictions
If a sedative or anesthesia is to be used for the procedure, the doctor will tell you when your child must stop consuming foods and liquids. It can be helpful to schedule the imaging test early in the morning so your child is not as affected by the lack of food.
